Car theft has reportedly been up in some parts of the country. Law enforcement are attributing this in part to a new social media challenge that encourages teens and young adults to break into and steal cars.
What preventive measures can you take to protect your car?
While this new alarming trend brings new awareness, it is always a good idea to take the following measures to protect yourself from auto theft.
- Invest in a steering wheel lock
- Always lock your car doors and never leave your car keys or a spare key in your vehicle
- Close and lock windows
- Never leave valuables in your car, especially in plain site
- Park your car in secure locations
- Park in well-lit areas
- Install a car alarm system and anti theft device
- Install a vehicle immobilizer system and/or tracking system
- If you have a USB wire or a charger in your car, make sure it is not visible (criminals may use USB wires to jump-start vehicles)
- Never leave your car unattended and running
Check your insurance coverage
Another important preventative measure is ensuring you have the right auto insurance coverage. It is important to always review your policy and make sure that any changes are updated to your policy (i.e. you’ve added a new driver or you have moved).
If you’ve taken any of the precautionary measures listed above, you may find that some result in a discount on your insurance (like adding steering wheel locks or alarm systems). Ask your agent to review your coverage for discounts and to verify that your coverage is adequate to your current needs and circumstances.
What should I do if I am a victim of vehicle theft?
If you discover that your car is stolen, contact the police immediately to file a police report. You also need to contact your insurance company to notify them of the theft. A car thief may steel cars not only for the vehicle itself, but also to obtain your vehicle identification number. A car’s vehicle identification number can be used for identity theft so filing a report immediately is a critical step. Establishing the time, date and location of the theft is essential documentation should someone try to use your registration information.
