Before becoming owner, President & CEO of Brooks, Todd & McNeil in 2008, Stephen worked as a multi-line, Commercial Lines Underwriter for American States Insurance Company. Prior to that he worked for Travelers Insurance Company as a licensed National Account Liability Inside Claims adjuster, Outside adjuster and then as a Litigation Specialist. He also worked in the Finance department of the home office of Travelers in Hartford, CT, where he helped compile and present a 265 million dollar budget for the Field offices in 1985.
Stephen came to the agency in 1991, where he started in Commercial Remarketing, and oversaw the Claims department. His duties expanded to include oversight of Commercial and Personal Lines Service, and he was part of the senior management team with the owners for Finance. Stephen was Vice President of the Young Insurance Professionals (PIA) and was a recipient of the Young Insurance Professional of the Year for Connecticut in 1998. He was also Chairman of the Young Agents Committee (IIAA), and a recipient of the Young Agent of the Year for Connecticut in 1999. He has served on the National Agents Advisory Council for Central Insurance Company and MSA/National Grange Insurance Company. He also has served on regional advisory councils for Harleysville Insurance Company, and Acadia Insurance Company, and presently serves on the Jonathan Trumbull Agents Advisory Council of The Hartford and the National Advisory Council of Utica National Insurance Group.
In 2002, Stephen led the BT&M team in developing the insurance industry’s first real-time, simultaneous, personal lines comparative rater system over the internet. He worked closely with David Cooksley, President of Xcipio, to bring this capability to the independent agency system, which revolutionized the independent agent industry system, by allowing them to compete with direct writers more effectively and efficiently, with single entry.
Stephen is also presently serving as past-President of the Northwest CT YMCA Board of Directors, Vice President of the Lake Titus Protective Association, Corporator for Northwest Community Bank and Maria Seymour Booker Memorial and is on the Safeco Regional Agents Advisory Council. He formerly served as Vice President on the Board of Directors for Crossroads Ranch for disadvantaged youth, Vice President of Five Points Center for the Visual Arts and was a Corporator for Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.
Stephen has lived locally in New Hartford, CT since 1992 and is the proud parent of Michaela, Erica and Angela Todd. He has been a dedicated coach for his daughters’ soccer, basketball and softball teams for 11 years and they are all avid downhill skiers. Stephen also enjoys spending time with his longtime girlfriend, Janet Culver, and her daughter, Ashley. Additional interests include trail running, lifting, skiing, golfing, traveling and he has completed 1 triathlon and 84 half-marathons.
